"Data analysis in psychology" covers a lot of ground, and depending on where you are in your research it will mean one thing or another. Here I clarify what it includes, the methods most used in psychology and, importantly, when it's worth doing it yourself and when to outsource it.
What data analysis in psychology is
It's the set of statistical techniques you use to turn your study's data into defensible conclusions. In psychology it has a particularity compared to other fields: you work heavily with latent constructs. You don't observe "anxiety" directly, you measure it with a scale. That's why psychometrics and latent-variable models carry enormous weight here: much of the analysis consists of showing that your instruments measure well before drawing conclusions.
The most common methods
- Classic descriptive and inferential: means and standard deviations, the t-test, ANOVA, correlation, regression.
- Psychometrics: exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA/CFA), reliability (alpha, omega), measurement invariance, item response theory (IRT).
- Advanced models: structural equation modelling (SEM), mediation and moderation, multilevel models, latent class analysis and meta-analysis.

Do it yourself or outsource it?
Do it yourself if you master the technique, have time and it's a standard analysis (a couple of ANOVAs, a correlation). Learning and doing it strengthens your training.
Outsource it if it's an advanced analysis you don't control (SEM, invariance, multilevel), if a reviewer requires it, if you're running out of time, or if you want to make sure the statistics don't sink your paper at a Q1 journal. Outsourcing isn't "not knowing": it's prioritising. Many researchers delegate statistics just as they delegate English editing.
