Thesis Mills vs. Statistical Consultant: How to Tell Them Apart

When you look for help with your thesis statistics, you'll run into two worlds that advertise themselves similarly but are opposites: the statistical consultant and the "thesis mill". Confusing them can cost you dearly, from wasted money to an academic-fraud accusation. Here's how to tell them apart at a glance.

What each one is

A statistical consultant is an expert who runs or supervises the analysis of your study, explains it to you, and leaves you understanding it and able to defend it. They work on your design and your data; you remain the author.

A thesis mill is a service that sells you the thesis (or paper) "turnkey": they write whole chapters you don't understand and couldn't reproduce, and disappear after delivery. That isn't support, it's impersonation.

The red flags of a mill

• They offer to write your full thesis or paper, not just the statistics.
• They charge by word or by chapter.
• They don't explain the method or give you the syntax or the outputs.
• There's no real person with a name, credentials and publications behind it.
• They promise "guaranteed pass" or "guaranteed publication" (no serious professional promises that).

How a good consultant behaves

• Works on your design and your data; reinforces your authorship rather than replacing it.
• Hands you the reproducible syntax and explains every methodological decision.
• Helps you acknowledge it (transparency, not concealment).
• Has a face, verifiable credentials and a publication record.
• Leaves you ready to answer your committee or the reviewers.

Why the difference matters

A mill exposes you to a fail or a retraction if discovered, and leaves you unable to defend your own work. A consultant reinforces you: you come out knowing more and with a defensible analysis.
