Enago AI Peer Review Lite alternative: what it checks, what it costs, and when something else fits better

Enago AI Peer Review Lite is Enago’s “AI + experts” review: a proprietary AI goes through the manuscript against 24 journal checkpoints, and subject-matter experts validate the result, correct errors and add comments. It is the closest competitor to Previum on one specific point: a person stands behind the report.

This page compares the two, and Previum is mine, so read it as written by an interested party. Everything about Enago comes from its service page, read on 7 October 2026: the price, the turnaround, the checkpoints and the security section. Prices change; check them on their site before you decide.

Where Enago is better

On human validation. Enago has a subject-matter expert read the AI’s report, validate its findings and add their own commentary. Previum is an automated review: I tuned it against what real reviewers say, but it does not replace a person reading your text.

Also on format. Enago’s report follows the checkpoints a journal typically applies and is easy to read top to bottom. If you want a closed list of criteria with a yes or a no on each, that is a legitimate way to frame it.

Where Previum is better

On speed and on being able to see it before you pay. The Basic report is free with your account and gives you the finding that decides the review, with the sentence it objects to and the fix, plus your references checked against eight databases, your p values recomputed and the figures that contradict each other. With Enago you start with a quote and wait for delivery.

And on the statistics, which are checked with code and not described by a model: every p value is recomputed from its statistic and degrees of freedom, means go through GRIM and the N is followed from one section to another. The measure is public: our run on ReviewBench, 200 eLife articles against human reviewers and Reviewer3, is published with its JSON.

AI with an expert or AI alone: what you buy in each case

Enago sells a specific promise: with experts reviewing the AI’s output, its page says, there is no risk of hallucinations or errors in the final report. That is a fair reason to pay for the human layer, and it is a promise you can only test by reading your own report.

Previum makes the opposite bet: a review that does not pretend to be human but shows its work. Each objection quotes the sentence in your manuscript, and whatever can be computed is computed with code, so you can check the p value or the reference being flagged yourself. If you would rather have a person go over it with you, a statistical review by a person is a different thing and is requested separately.

How to decide

If you want a report structured by checkpoint with an expert behind it and you do not mind waiting, Enago covers that. If you have a paper headed for a journal and want to see real objections on your own text before paying, start with the Basic report here: it costs nothing and in a few minutes you know whether its objections land on your method and analysis or on generalities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Enago AI Peer Review Lite cost?

On 7 October 2026 its service page advertised $99 on offer ($149 list) per manuscript, delivered in 4 days. Prices change and the site asks for a quote: check it there.

Is Enago Peer Review Lite done by a person or by AI?

Both: a proprietary AI reviews the manuscript against 24 checkpoints and subject-matter experts validate the result, correct errors and add comments. Previum is an automated review, with no person in the loop, and says so.

Does Enago check the references?

Its page assesses the relevance of the citations under background and literature; it does not advertise checking that each reference exists. Previum checks each reference against eight databases, with two having to agree, already in the Basic report, which is free.

Is it safe to upload an unpublished manuscript to Enago?

Its page says it processes data with locally deployed language models and does not use ChatGPT or external AI applications. Read any service’s privacy policy before uploading unpublished work; ours is linked on every page, and the manuscript is not stored.

Which Enago Peer Review Lite alternative has a free tier?

Previum: the Basic report is free with your account and gives you the finding that decides, the references against eight databases and the recomputed p values. Professional adds two simulated reviewers and an editor, every objection and your Word file commented in the margin, for a one-off payment.
