Norms Table Generator (Percentile, z, T)

The norms table generator turns the raw scores of your sample into the complete norms appendix of a validation thesis: empirical percentile by mid-rank (PR = 100·(cf + f/2)/n, tied scores share a percentile), linear z score (z = (X − M)/SD) and T score (T = 50 + 10z), overall and by group (sex, school year...), collapsing raw scores that share a percentile into ranges. It adds the descriptives (n, M, SD, median, skewness and kurtosis with their standard errors, SPSS formulas) and a methodological note in APA 7 ready for the Method section. Worked example: Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale in 300 students (women n = 159, M = 29.40, SD = 5.04; men n = 141, M = 30.67, SD = 4.52; overall M = 29.99, SD = 4.84): a raw score of 34 corresponds to the 79th percentile in the overall norms (z = 0.83, T = 58.3), the 81st among women and the 78th among men. How many participants are needed for norming? With fewer than 100 per group the extreme percentiles depend on a handful of cases and the norms should be presented as provisional (Fernandez-Ballesteros, 2013); commercial tests use 300 or more per group. Empirical percentiles or normalised scores? The z and T scores of this tool are linear transformations: they preserve the real shape of the distribution and do not normalise it (no stanines, deliberately); if the distribution is strongly skewed, the percentile is the honest reference.
