t Table, Z Table, Chi-Square and F Tables (Critical Values)

Student’s t, standard normal (z), chi-square and F tables computed to full precision, with how to read each one and the exact p value for your statistic.

The four distribution tables used in a statistics course or a thesis, computed to full precision (not copied from a book) and with an explanation of how to read each one. If you have the value of your statistic, an exact p value beats comparing with a critical value: the tool above computes it, and it is what APA 7 asks for.

Student’s t table: critical values

Find the row for your degrees of freedom (df = n − 1 for one sample; n₁ + n₂ − 2 for two independent groups with equal variances) and the column for your α. The first header row is the two-tailed α and the second the equivalent one-tailed α. Example: with df = 20 and two-tailed α = .05, critical t = 2.086; if your |t| is larger, the result is significant. The last row (∞) matches the standard normal.

Z table: standard normal distribution

Each cell is Φ(z), the proportion of the area under the normal curve to the left of z. The row gives the units and tenths of z and the column the hundredths: Φ(1.96) is in row 1.9 and column 0.06, and equals .9750. For negative z, use symmetry: Φ(−z) = 1 − Φ(z). The area between −1.96 and 1.96 is .95, which is where the 1.96 in 95% intervals comes from.

Chi-square (χ²) table: critical values

Each cell is the value that leaves a proportion α of the χ² distribution with those degrees of freedom to its right. In a contingency table, df = (rows − 1) × (columns − 1); in a goodness-of-fit test, categories − 1. Example: a 2 × 3 table has df = 2 and, at α = .05, the critical value is 5.991.

F table (α = .05)

F has two degrees of freedom: df₁ in the numerator (columns) and df₂ in the denominator (rows). In a one-way ANOVA, df₁ = groups − 1 and df₂ = N − groups. Example: 3 groups and 30 participants give F(2, 27); at α = .05 the critical value is 3.354.

Critical value or exact p value

Tables are useful to understand the logic of a test and for exams, but a paper reports the exact p value to two or three decimals ("p = .019", "p < .001"), not "p < .05" from a table lookup. How to do it is in how to report p values in APA 7. To turn an individual score into a percentile there is the Z-score converter, and for the interval of a mean or a proportion, the confidence interval calculator.
