Writefull alternative: what it does, what it does not review, and when you need something else

Writefull is an academic writing assistant: it edits and rewrites your English, paraphrases, generates titles and abstracts, and works inside Word and Overleaf. It is very good at that and does not compete with Previum, which does something else: it checks whether your manuscript will stand up to a reviewer.

So “Writefull alternative” is best searched with the question put right: do you want another editor, or do you want to know what the journal will object to? Previum is mine, so read this as written by an interested party. What I say about Writefull comes from its plans page, read on 7 October 2026. Prices change; check them on its site before you decide.

Where Writefull is better

At everything to do with prose. Correcting English, adapting tone, paraphrasing, splitting a long sentence or finding the synonym that fits its context are things Writefull does inside your editor while you write. Previum arrives when the manuscript already exists and does not touch your wording.

Also in the LaTeX workflow: its Overleaf integration, with help for tables, equations and errors, has no equivalent in mine. And if you want a plan for a group or an institution, Writefull offers them.

Where Previum is better

In what an editor does not look at. A paper can be in flawless English and still be rejected for a badly chosen analysis, a p value that does not follow from its degrees of freedom, or an N that changes between the abstract and the table. The Basic report is free with your account and gives you the finding that decides the review, with the sentence it objects to and the fix, plus your references checked against eight databases and the figures that contradict each other.

And it is measured: the statistics are checked with code, not described by a model, and our run on ReviewBench, 200 eLife articles against human reviewers and Reviewer3, is published with its JSON.

You do not have to choose

The two add up. A sensible order is to review first what the reviewer will object to (method, analysis, figures, references) and polish the English last, on the final text, because every substantive fix changes sentences you had already corrected. If your journal asks for English checked by a native speaker with a certificate, that is human editing, and a different service.

If what you need is a language correction with minimal changes and tracked changes you accept or reject one by one, without touching figures, statistics or references, I also do that, separately.

How to decide

If your bottleneck is the English, Writefull is a good tool and probably the one you want. If you have a paper headed for a journal and do not know what it will object to, start with the Basic report here: it costs nothing and in a few minutes you know whether its objections land on your method and analysis or on generalities.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Writefull cost?

On 7 October 2026 its plans page showed a free plan, Premium at €135 a year, Group from €257 a year and Institution on request. Prices change: check its site.

Does Writefull review the method or the statistics of my paper?

No: it edits and rewrites the text and does not assess whether the method or the analysis holds up. Previum does exactly that, recomputing p values with code, running means through GRIM and following the N from one section to another.

Does Writefull check that my references exist?

Its plans page offers Writefull Cite to help you cite, but does not advertise checking that each reference exists. Previum checks each reference against eight databases, with two having to agree, already in the Basic report, which is free.

Can I use Writefull and Previum together?

Yes, and the sensible order is substance first and form last: review method, analysis, figures and references with Previum, then polish the English with Writefull on the final text.

Which Writefull alternative has a free tier?

If you want another English editor, Writefull already has a free plan. If you want to know what a reviewer will object to, Previum: the Basic report is free with your account and gives you the finding that decides, the references against eight databases and the recomputed p values.
